5 Things You Should Check Before Bike Riding This Spring

Spring is a great time to get out the bikes and explore, but make sure you give your bikes a good check before taking them out.

1. Check the tires to make sure that you have the proper thread. If your tires are balding it will make it difficult to stop and could cause you to skid. Be sure that the tires are inflated with the correct amount of air. Usually, there is a marking on the side of the tire that will tell you how much pressure is needed. You should also check to make sure that the spokes are straight and tight and your wheel doesn't wobble back and forth.

2. Check the chain to make sure that is attached correctly. During storage, it could have become loose or caught. Chains can also stretch out over time.  You don’t want it to come off while you’re riding!  You can also add dry lubricant to the chain and any other moving parts. Dry lubricant for bicycles can be found online or at any other place that sells bike parts and accessories. This helps keep the parts moving without being oily. I usually give the pedals a spin while I’m doing this just to make sure they aren’t broken and sometimes give them some dry lube as well.

3. Check the brakes to make sure that the brakes are working properly. The brakes should stop the wheel completely when engaged.  You can check this by lifting the wheel off the ground, spinning it, and pushing the break.

4. Check the seat height, especially if the bike belongs to your child. I am always amazed at how my children shoot up in just a couple of months. Be sure that the seat is adjusted high enough so your child can safely ride without their knees hitting the handles and low enough that they can stand flat-footed on the ground when they stop. (Bike Size Chart). Make sure that the seat is tight and won't turn from side to side.

5. Check the helmet. While the helmet isn't a bike part, it's just as important.  Check that the helmet itself is in good condition with no cracks and that the padding, which is often attached with velcro, is still in the correct location. Then have the child put it on and make sure that it still fits. (Helmet fit guide)

After checking your bikes, be sure to review safety rules with your children. You can also find safe local riding trails here. Happy biking!
